Iowa Hunting Summary
In the past several years, the rich farmland of Iowa has produced some truly great whitetails. Nonresidents can apply for a tag to hunt with a shotgun, muzzleloader or bow. Draw success for the shotgun and muzzleloader tags usually runs around 85%. The archery tags are a little more difficult to come by. It typically takes two, and sometimes three, years to draw an archery tag, so planning ahead is essential.
Iowa deer hunting is world class due in part to superior whitetail genetics, hunting seasons that allow many bucks to reach older age classes, and has plenty protein rich crops all 3 combine for the perfect recipe for monster bucks. Iowa has timed the gun season to take place after the rut, which makes the bucks less vulnerable and gives them more time to mature. Success rates in Iowa average 65-70% for shotgun hunters, 50% for blackpowder and 30% for bow hunters.
If you were born after Jan. 1, 1967, you must also include a copy of your hunter's safety card to apply for a hunting license.
Turkey and pheasant are also targeted by both resident and non-resident hunters in the Hawkeye State.
